Hip and leg Pain

Hip and leg Pain

Hip pain can arise from a variety of issues, and its specific location can offer valuable clues about the underlying cause.

Pain in the lower part of your hip or your groin area often indicates problems with the hip joint itself. Commonly, pain that radiates to your outer buttock, upper thigh, or hip is due to inflammation in the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues surrounding the hip joint.

Sometimes, hip pain can originate from conditions affecting other areas of your body, such as your lower back. This type of pain is known as referred pain or “radicular pain.”

Leg pain can affect your entire leg or just a specific area, like your knee or shin. It may come on suddenly or gradually, and can be intermittent or chronic. The pain may feel sharp, dull, aching, or tingling.

Severe leg pain can make walking or bearing weight difficult. When pain radiates down your leg, it is often referred pain (radicular pain) originating from your lower back.

TREATMENTS

Hip pain may be alleviated with over-the-counter pain relievers such as naproxen sodium (Aleve), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, and others), and acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Prescription NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can also help reduce inflammation.

Participating in physical therapy that focuses on strengthening your core or abdominal muscles may help improve your hip muscles more effectively. Strengthening your hip muscles through physical therapy could also provide relief from pain.

Hip discomfort may be alleviated with intra-articular injections, where cortisone is injected directly into the hip joint. Additionally, injections can help relieve pain associated with trochanteric bursitis in the outer hip.
