Joint Pain

Joint Pain

Joint pain can stem from issues with a joint’s cartilage, bone, ligaments, tendons, muscles, or other supporting structures. However, the most common terms used to describe this type of pain are arthritis or arthralgia, which refer to inflammation or pain originating within the joint.

Joint pain can vary from mild soreness after specific activities to severe pain with minimal movement, especially when carrying weight.

TREATMENTS

Try an over-the-counter pain reliever such as naproxen sodium (Aleve) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, etc.).

For some types of joint pain, physical therapy may be helpful. Exercises can strengthen the muscles around the joints and improve range of motion. In some cases, braces or splints may also be necessary.

In certain cases, your doctor may recommend injecting medications or other substances directly into your joint. For example:

– **Corticosteroids**: Injecting corticosteroid medication into your knee joint may help reduce the symptoms of an arthritis flare-up and provide temporary pain relief. However, not every situation benefits from these injections.

– **Hyaluronic Acid**: This viscous fluid, injected into the knee, aims to improve mobility and reduce pain by mimicking the natural lubricant in joints. Although studies on its effectiveness have produced mixed results, relief from a single injection or a series of injections can last up to six months.

– **Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)**: PRP contains concentrated growth factors that may help reduce inflammation and promote healing. While some research suggests that PRP might benefit certain patients with osteoarthritis, further studies are needed.

Partial or total knee replacement surgery may be considered as a treatment option for knee pain.
