Bursitis

Bursitis

Bursae (bur-SEE) are tiny, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles near your joints. When these sacs become inflamed, a condition called bursitis (bur-SY-tis) occurs.

Bursitis most commonly affects the hip, elbow, and shoulder. However, it can also develop at the base of the big toe, near the heel, or around the knee. Bursitis typically occurs around joints that undergo frequent repetitive activity.

TREATMENTS

Your doctor might prescribe an antibiotic if the inflammation in your bursa is caused by an infection.

To alleviate discomfort and prevent it from returning, the muscles in the injured area can be strengthened through physical therapy or exercises.

Injections: A corticosteroid injection into the bursa can help alleviate shoulder and hip discomfort and reduce inflammation. This medication typically takes effect immediately, and in many cases, only one injection is needed.

Surgery: While surgical drainage of an inflamed bursa is sometimes necessary, the surgical removal of the affected bursa is not usually required.
